Young people start having sex laterAt 18.1 years, half of young people between the ages of 12 and 25 have had sexual intercourse. In 2012, this was the case at 17.1 years. This is evident from the third edition of the large-scale representative study Sex under 25 that Rutgers and Soa Aids Nederland will present on Tuesday 20 June. Girls seem to be more consciously choosing a contraceptive that suits them, because the use of the pill has decreased in favor of the IUD. It is worrying that more than 40% of young people do not use a condom during a one-night stand. Compared to 2012, the number of young people who have been forced to do or allow something sexual has decreased. On the other hand, the number of young people who have sent a nude photo or sex video of themselves has increased considerably.Young people start later Not only do young people in 2017 start having sexual intercourse later than in 2012; This also applies to other forms of sex, such as kissing. The group of young people who have their first sexual experience at a very young age, between 12 and 14, has become smaller. This is good, because young people who start having sex very early are more often forced or persuaded and more often do it unprotected. Also positive: boys and girls enjoy sex: 94% of sexually experienced boys and 90% of sexually experienced girls find sex enjoyable.Better protection against pregnancy Compared to 2012, more young people use a form of contraception when having sex for the first time. Although the pill is still the most commonly used method of contraception, its use is decreasing sharply: from 61% to 50% among girls with experience of sexual intercourse. Instead of the pill, girls are more often choosing other contraceptives, especially the IUD (11%). Because you have to take the pill every day and it is easy to forget, an IUD can be a good alternative for girls.No condoms for one-night stands 70% of young people still use a condom when having sex for the first time. After that, condom use decreases sharply. More than 40% of young people do not use a condom during a one-night stand. When young people with a sexual partner stop using condoms, 75% of boys and 66% of girls say they have not been tested for STDs.More sexting than in 2012 In the past six months, 12% of girls and 13% of boys have sent a nude photo or sex video of themselves to someone else. That is much more than in 2012, with 4% of girls and 6% of boys respectively. And: 24% of boys and 19% of girls received a personal nude photo or sex video. Of the young people whose nude photo or sex video was forwarded to others (2% of boys and 1% of girls), more than half of the boys and three quarters of the girls indicated that they found this annoying.Sexual transgression slightly decreased 2% of the boys and 11% of the girls indicate that they have ever been forced to do or allow something in the sexual area. This is a slight decrease compared to 2012: 4% of the boys and 17% of the girls had been forced to have sex at that time.Homonegativity decreased The number of young people who disapprove of expressions of homosexuality has decreased sharply. In 2012, half of the boys and a quarter of the girls disapproved of two boys kissing each other on the street. In 2017, that percentage has almost halved to 27% of the boys and 13% of the girls.Representative research Sex under 25 2017 provides a representative picture of the sexual health of young people aged 12 to 25. The first two editions of Sex under 25 took place in 2005 and 2012. The research was conducted by Rutgers and Soa Aids Nederland in collaboration with the GGDs. For the first time, more than half of the GGDs provided additional respondents in order to provide representative figures specifically for their own region. This resulted in more than 20,000 young people participating in the research. Sex under 25 is part of the RIVM Lifestyle Monitor. The results of Sex under 25 will improve information and assistance for young people. Professionals who deal with the sexual health of young people in research, practice and policy contributed to the questionnaire and the themes that are addressed in it. At the conference Sex under 25 on 20 June, we will present the results to all parties involved.
